An Imperial Japanese Army airfield completed in 1944 to supplement Pingtung Airfield, distinct from the IJN’s Takao Airfield in Gangshan. It was attacked by aircraft from USS Wasp on October 12, 1944, prompting the construction of reinforced concrete aircraft hangars around the perimeter. In the post-war it became an ROC Air Force base before being converted into a civilian airport in 1965, eventually growing into modern-day Kaohsiung International Airport (高雄國際機場). At least five reinforced concrete aircraft hangars survive in the surrounding neighborhoods, two abandoned and three converted into residences.
