Soton Airfield (草屯飛行場) was one of many military airfields built near the end of World War 2 in Taiwan. This airfield had three runways completed by early 1945 but only one survived the early post-war period. Following the devastating August 7th, 1959 (八七水災) the derelict runway was used as stable ground for the construction of post-disaster relief housing. This community, also known as Feijicheng (飛機程), follows the entire length of the runway from Bishan Road (碧山路) south to a creek winding across the plains. Originally the homes were made with red brick and bamboo rooftops but many have been renovated or completely replaced over the years, leaving the community a patchwork of different architectural styles.
The linearity of the community is obvious when looking south along the side of the former runway.

I am a web application developer, photojournalist, urban explorer, and history enthusiast passionate about the open web and documenting my experiences on this planet. This project was founded in the early 2010s and has evolved into a sort of personal Wikipedia of places that interest me (and often the photographs I’ve taken there). I’m originally from Toronto, Canada, but spend most of my time residing in Taiwan.
