A shrine to the Southern Song dynasty Neo-Confucian philosopher Zhu Xi (朱熹) tucked within the grounds of Wujiang Academy (浯江書院) in Jincheng. Zhu Xi served as subprefectural registrar of Tong’an (同安縣主簿) beginning in 1153 and visited Kinmen to inspect schools, an influence credited with seeding the island’s enduring literary tradition. The academy was founded in 1780 and the shrine added shortly thereafter. When the surrounding complex was demolished in 1964 to make way for the township office, the shrine alone was preserved. The academy was rebuilt on its original footprint in 2003 and an annual rite is held here on Zhu Xi’s birthday.
