Established by Teikoku Seitō (帝國製糖株式會社) in 1912, this sugar factory was abolished in 1990 and most of its buildings were demolished soon after. The sole survivor is the office (帝國製糖廠臺中營業所), completed in 1935 with khaki facing tiles, a beige stucco base, and geometric ornamentation around the entrance in an Art Deco style. An abortive shopping mall project left a basement excavation on the grounds that flooded during Typhoon Nari (納莉颱風) in 2001; the resulting lake now anchors Lakeside Park (湖濱公園), bordered by an outpost of the Lalaport chain of shopping malls. After a long period of abandonment the office was designated a cultural heritage property and nicely restored, reopening in 2019 alongside part of the park.
