Established in 1932 as Shōhei-za (昇平座), originally with a capacity of 600. It changed names after the war and was extensively renovated in the late 1950s. The theater closed in 1986 and the roof of the building was ripped off in a typhoon in 1994. After many years of neglect it was donated to the government and renovated into a tourist attraction beginning in 2009.
