A former gold mining town that prospered during the Japanese colonial era, once known as “Little Shanghai”. After the mines closed in 1971 the town fell into decline until the 1989 film A City of Sadness (悲情城市) brought renewed attention to the area. Now one of Taiwan’s most popular tourist destinations, famous for its narrow lantern-lit alleyways, tea houses, and mountain vistas.
