A 50 meter tunnel hand-carved by gold miners in 1902, serving as the original connection between Ruifang and Jiufen. The name “pong” (磅) is Hokkien for “weighing”, as ore from the mines would have been measured here before transport. Before the road was built, this was the only route in and out of Jiufen. The tunnel has never been lined with concrete, leaving the raw rock exposed.
