Pitou

Pítóu (埤頭) is a rural agricultural township in southern Changhua. Its name, literally “head of the pond”, is a reference to an old irrigation reservoir. With a current population of approximately 29,000 the township’s economy centers on rice cultivation, particularly the specialty Koshihikari rice (越光米). The most notable site in Pitou is Hexing Temple (1779), known for displaying an unexploded American AN-M64 bomb from World War 2 that locals attribute to divine protection by Mazu, affectionately called “Bomb Mazu” (炸彈媽).
