The ancestral hall of the Nian (粘) family in Fuxing, Changhua, the focal point of what is said to be the only Jurchen (女真族) community in Taiwan. The Nian trace their descent from the imperial house of the Jin dynasty (大金帝國), and in particular from the general Nianhan (粘罕), known formally as Wanyan Zonghan (完顏宗翰). Their founding ancestors crossed from Jinjiang (晉江) in Fujian and settled here during the Qianlong era of the Qing dynasty, forming the village of Niancuo (粘厝庄).
Although an ancestral hall in name, the building carries the character of a temple: formally titled Huanzhong Hall (桓忠堂) after Nianhan’s posthumous name, it enshrines a statue of the ancestor, and a mural in the main hall depicts an upright war-dragon clutching a family surname banner and a battle-axe, a proud emblem of descent from the Jin ruling family. The hall holds spring and autumn rites and ancestral ceremonies at Lunar New Year, drawing Nian descendants from across Taiwan, and serves as the gathering place for the community’s annual kinship assembly.
