A dusky view of this small shrine next to Yingpan Elementary School.
A small temple to Qijiangjun (七將軍), the Seven Generals, a local legend venerating six Qing soldiers and a loyal dog, next to Yingpan Elementary School (營盤國小) in Nantou City. It holds an inscribed wooden plaque from 1881, dedicated by Zheng Weilin (鄭維霖), an officer who had come to Taiwan with the general Wu Guangliang (吳光亮) in 1875 amid the Mudan Incident (牡丹社事件). The plaque was registered as a general antiquity in 2014.
Incense smoke has darkened the ceiling over the offering table.
The main altar is behind metal shutters. A plaque dedicated by Zheng Weilin, a registered antiquity, can be seen at top left.
The incinerator in front of the temple has a curious expression written on its site: zhongwangwang (中旺旺), where the last two characters are an auspicious rendering of a dog’s bark. The precise meaning is elusive.
I am a web application developer, photojournalist, urban explorer, and history enthusiast passionate about the open web and documenting my experiences on this planet. This project was founded in the early 2010s and has evolved into a sort of personal Wikipedia of places that interest me (and often the photographs I’ve taken there). I’m originally from Toronto, Canada, but spend most of my time residing in Taiwan.
