Established around 1914 as a forest farm affiliated with the University of Kyoto. It was originally focused on the cultivation of Cinchona trees, a source of quinine, the drug used to treat malaria. In the post-war period it continued to operate as an experimental forest farm but in recent years it has been converted into an ecological garden open to tourists. It is periodically closed due to typhoon damage to the roads leading into the mountains.
