Founded in 1824 by Lukang subprefect Deng Chuan’an (鄧傳安) and completed in 1828, the academy was named for Shen Guangwen (沈光文), the Ming-Zheng era scholar widely credited with seeding Taiwan’s classical literary tradition. Alongside Zhu Xi, the academy enshrined eight Ming loyalist scholars, an unusually forward gesture that broke with conventional Confucian veneration. Over its seventy years of Qing operation it produced several jinshi scholars and stands immediately adjacent to Lukang Wenwu Temple. The compound was repurposed as a memorial hall to Prince Kitashirakawa during the late Japanese colonial era, gutted by fire in 1975, rebuilt by 1985, and restored again following damage in the 921 Earthquake. Under renovation as of 2026.
