Keelung Aquarium

Taiwan’s first aquarium, established in April 1916 as an extended part of Takasago Park (高砂公園). The original facility at Shaochuantou (哨船頭) featured two large water tanks and attracted tens of thousands of visitors in its first year. In 1935, a second-generation aquarium was constructed at Dashawan Beach (大沙灣海水浴場) to coincide with the Taiwan Exhibition commemorating 40 years of Japanese rule. The new facility was damaged by Allied bombing during World War 2 and eventually demolished; its former site is now the Keelung Port Authority Training Center (基隆港務局員工訓練所). The original first-generation site is now occupied by the Leofoo Jinghua Building (六福晶華大廈) on Yiyi Road (義一路).
