Established in 1933 to commemorate the Japanese Prince Kitashirakawa Yoshihisa, who perished in Tainan in 1895 during the invasion of Taiwan. It occupies the site of the easternmost building of the old Keelung Customs House (基隆海關), built in 1864 after the port opened to foreign trade, where the prince and the Imperial Guards Division quartered for a week in June 1895 before moving on to Xizhi. After the war the inscription was defaced, which is how it appears today. Three characters reading yang huang you (仰皇猷), brushed by Taihoku Imperial University president Shidehara Taira (幣原坦) as an exhortation to revere the prince’s example, survive on the rock face above.
