Xiandao Amusement Park opened in 1964, the year the Shimen Reservoir was completed, on a hilltop reachable only by boat across from Shimen Reservoir Wharf (石門水庫碼頭). It was run by the late pastor Huang Jung-chuan (黃榮泉) and other residents of Xiandao, a small community of Tayal families displaced from the Bilus (石門) and Kala (卡拉社) settlements, some of whom returned here after passing through the ill-fated resettlement villages at Zhongzhuang and Datan. Huang modelled the park on Indigenous tourism in Wulai, hoping it would win respect for Tayal culture; visitors watched dance performances in a wooden theater seating approximately 200. The park closed in 1990 as tourism around the reservoir withered under tightening water protection rules, and a government attempt to revive the island around 2004 with a loop trail, pavilions, and toilets drew hardly any visitors. Residents have petitioned for years for a road connecting the village to the shore, but the project remains stalled at environmental review.
