Founded according to local tradition in 1721, with 1807 as the earliest written record, this Mazu temple in central Erlin hosted the September 1925 farmers’ assembly that triggered the Erlin Incident (二林事件), one of the most significant peasant uprisings of Japanese colonial era Taiwan. Historic relics include calligraphic plaques by Yu Youren (于右任) and Huang Chaoqin (黃朝琴). Severely damaged in the 921 Earthquake of 1999, the temple was restored from 2000 onward.
