Liaoxia Wanshan Temple

A temple beside Dongshi First Public Cemetery in Dongshi, Taichung, holding the bones of thousands of unidentified dead, among them militia of the Lin Shuangwen Rebellion (林爽文事件) annihilated by Tayal forces at Xiaxinzhuang (下新庄) in February 1788. The remains surfaced in 1910 during construction of a push car tramway along the road to Fengyuan and were interred in a hall built the following year. The remains were relocated again in 1924 to make way for Dongshi Public Hall (東勢公會堂) and rehoused by 1926 as Bao’an Temple (東勢本街保安祠). The 921 Earthquake ruined that building and the ossuary broke open, scattering bones across the ground. The temple was rebuilt on the present site in 2003.
