Kaohsiung Confucian Temple stands on the north shore of Lotus Pond (蓮池潭) in Zuoying, backed by Banpingshan (半屏山). Completed in 1976, it succeeded the original Fongshan Old City Confucian Temple (鳳山舊城孔子廟), established in 1684, of which only the Chongsheng Shrine (崇聖祠) survives within nearby Jiucheng Elementary School. Designed in Song dynasty style, the Dacheng Hall is modeled after Beijing’s Hall of Supreme Harmony. After the 2010 city-county merger gave Kaohsiung both this temple and the one in Qishan, the annual Confucian ceremony alternates between the two.
