A shrine to the war dead of the Republic of China at Dazhi (大直) in Zhongshan, Taipei, near the Grand Hotel. It occupies the site of the Taiwan Gokoku Shrine, which became a provincial martyrs’ shrine in 1946 and was rebuilt on Chiang Kai-shek’s orders as the present complex, completed in 1969 and modelled on the Hall of Supreme Harmony in the Forbidden City. Its tablets honour more than 400,000 soldiers and civilians who died between the founding of the ROC and the battles for the offshore islands, and the hourly changing of its honour guard has made it a regular stop for foreign visitors.
