Founded in 1930 by Lai Achuan (賴阿傳), a Hakka migrant from Nanzhuang, Miaoli, who previously practiced vegetarian abstinence at Shitoushan Quanhua Temple. This hillside complex on the western edge of Yuli began as Baoshan Hall (寶善堂), a zhaitang (齋堂), or fasting hall, of the Longhua (龍華) branch of the Zhaijiao (齋教) folk religion. The temple was later renamed after a nearby spring, the waters of which are reputed to cure illness. Reorganised as a Buddhist foundation in 1974 and reconstructed between 1992 and 2000.
