Yuanyangku Shinyo Base

Yuanyangku is a valley on the northeast coast of Wang’an, then known as Bazhao Island (八罩島), in Penghu. The 24th Shinyo Squadron (第24震洋隊) established barracks and a base here in the closing months of World War 2, conscripting islanders to cut the tunnels, an ordeal older residents of both islands still recall. Japan surrendered with the work unfinished and the site was abandoned, many of the tunnels collapsing in the decades since. It counts among the larger shinyo bases in Taiwan and, since the Penghu National Scenic Area Administration cleared it in 2017, the most open to visitors; the other base in Penghu lies at Dongbitou on Xiyu.
