Taipei 101 was the tallest building in the world when it was completed in 2004. Designed by architect C.Y. Lee in a postmodern style, it abstracts the segmented form of a bamboo stalk adorned with traditional ruyi scepters. Standing 508 meters tall, this 101 storey tower anchors the new business and shopping district in Xinyi, Taipei, and features Toshiba elevators that set a world speed record on completion and a tuned mass damper engineered to withstand both Pacific typhoons and major earthquakes.
