Originally established as Daxing Theater (大興大戲院) in the mid-1960s. It was later renamed Tianbao Theater (天寶戲院) in the early 1970s, but business remained tumultuous, and it was eventually reorganized as Nǎnshān Theater (湳山戲院). Only in the 1990s did it become a second-run theater. By the 2010s nearly all other standalone theaters in Taipei had closed, leaving Nanshan one of the chosen few to remain prosperous, largely due to the proximity to Tonghua Night Market. Finally it closed in 2023, ostensibly for renovations, but there are no signs of any reopening as of 2024.
