Established by local real estate developer Zhou Chen Yushu (周陳玉樹) and opened on August 2, 1964 as Lesheng Theater (樂聲戲院). The original single-screen auditorium seated 1,680 and was reportedly Taiwan’s largest at the time. Zhou Chen, who held extensive land on Wuchang Street, sold adjacent plots to investors who built Rixin Theater and Hoover Theater. Special zoning that restricted the land to theater use helped establish the street’s identity as Cinema Street. The adjacent Lesheng Plaza (樂聲廣場) has long hosted premieres and promotional events. The theater was later converted to a multi-screen format. A major 2014 renovation upgraded equipment, added screens, and made it Taiwan’s first 24-hour cinema; it was also renamed Lesheng Cinema (樂聲影城) at this time.
