A refined-salt plant on the windswept coast of Tongxiao, Miaoli, opened in 1975 and still operated by the Taiwan Salt Company (臺鹽). It produces table salt from seawater by ion-exchange membrane electrodialysis, a modern process that displaced traditional solar evaporation. Since 2011 part of the site has run as a tourist factory (觀光工廠), with a salt museum, a souvenir and popsicle shop, and a small park.
