The grave of George Leslie Mackay, who chose this spot behind New Taipei Private Tam-Kang High School before his death in 1901. His family walled it off from the adjoining Tamsui Foreign Cemetery to affirm that he was Taiwanese rather than a foreigner. His obelisk, inscribed in English and romanized Taiwanese on the front and Chinese characters on the back, stands between the graves of his wife Tiuⁿ Chhang-miâ (張聰明) and of his son George William Mackay (偕叡廉), who founded the school in 1914, amid those of early converts, in-laws, and students. It remains a private cemetery and can only be seen from the street without securing permission to enter school grounds.
