The first modern piped water supply completed in Taiwan, built from 1896 under the Japanese colonial government, with advice from the Scottish engineer William K. Burton (巴爾頓). It was constructed to carry spring water from Shuangjuntou (雙峻頭) in the Datun foothills down to the port and garrison at Tamsui. It entered into operation on April 1st, 1899, through iron mains running along what is now Shuiyuan Street (水源街). Taiwan Water Corporation still operates the source and keeps it closed to protect the water; the stone-built spring house, office, gate, and guardhouse were designated a monument in 2004, along with an air valve chamber on the campus of Tamkang University.
