Liyushan is the most prominent hill around central Taitung City, which is built on an alluvial fan, and its strategic importance was obvious to the Japanese colonial authorities, who extensively fortified the site in World War 2. Many of the original tunnels and bunkers were refurbished by the ROC army during the Cold War but the hill has long since been decommissioned as a military zone, and all that remains is abandoned to the elements. Several bunkers can be found around the hill, which is now a park, and some might be accessible, although the tunnel complex connecting different access points seems to be mostly filled in with dirt.
