Founded in 1917 as Tainan Girls’ Higher School (臺灣總督府臺南高等女學校) and relocated to this campus in 1918, the school’s main building (自強樓) is considered among the most well-preserved girls’ secondary school buildings from the Japanese colonial era in Taiwan. The red brick structure is transitional early modernist with neo-Baroque flourishes. A section of the Qing dynasty city wall runs along the southern perimeter, and on campus is a golden rain tree known as the “human rights tree” (人權樹), commemorating alumna Ting Iáu-thiáu (丁窈窕), who was executed during the White Terror.
