Completed in 1934 as the Sun Moon Lake No. 1 Generating Station (日月潭第一發電所), this was the centerpiece of the first phase of the Sun Moon Lake Hydroelectric Project and, at the time, the largest power plant in Asia. Water drawn from Sun Moon Lake drops some 320 meters through five Pelton wheel units for a combined 110 MW, with the tailwater passing downstream via Toushe Aqueduct to the Sun Moon Lake No. 2 Power Plant. It was renamed Daguan Power Plant (大觀發電廠) in 1946 after the site was inspected by Chiang Kai-shek.
