Old Houtong Railway Tunnel Group

Four single-track tunnels dug for the original Yilan Line (宜蘭線) through the hills of Ruifang, in service from 1920 until 1985, when a double-track alignment built to modern standards opened immediately to the west. Three of them, the Yuanshan tunnels, follow one another in quick succession; the longest, First Yuanshan Tunnel (第一員山隧道), curves for 152 meters and is the only one with refuge niches. The eponymous Houtong Tunnel is a short stretch closer to the station. All four combine stone portals and side walls with red brick arches. Registered as a heritage site in August 2012, the tunnels were incorporated into the newly-built Ruihou Bikeway (瑞猴自行車道) since March 2013. A pair of two-storey sentry posts of associated with the Bridge and Tunnel Company 102 (橋隧102連侯硐隧道班) under the Taiwan Garrison Command (臺灣警備總司令部) survive along the route, one next to the northern portal of Shide Tunnel (示德隧道), both repurposed to mount mobile antennas.
