A tidal wetland just south of the mouth of the Dajia River (大甲溪) in Qingshui, Taichung, officially the Gaomei Wildlife Refuge (高美野生動物保護區). It was a bathing beach from 1932 until the construction of Taichung Port, when a sand barrier north of the harbour trapped the river’s sediment and silted it up, forcing its closure in 1976. The mudflat left behind was made a protected area in 2004 and now draws large crowds at sunset, kept off the more sensitive habitat by a boardwalk within sight of Gaomei Lighthouse.
