Founded in 1737, this Mazu temple is the center of faith for Pingtung. Its principal icon is known as Ahou Mazu (阿猴媽祖) after the traditional name of the town. It was originally known as the Old Mazu Temple (舊媽祖宮) but was renamed during reconstruction in 1825. Much of the temple and its intricate internal woodwork was destroyed by a fire in December 1983, fortunately sparing the founding Mazu statue. A long process of restoration completed in 2002. The modern temple preserves numerous historic relics accumulated over the centuries.
