Completed in 1936 in what is now Nantou City, this was the first tax office (稅務出張所) established in Taichū Prefecture (臺中州), serving Nantou District through the Japanese colonial era. The original modernist building had a flat-roofed two-storey central block flanked by single-storey wings; a 1950 renovation replaced the flat roof with a pitched one and raised the wings to two storeys, giving it its present form. After the war it housed the county tax collection office and later the Nantou City Office and a police station. Registered as a historic building in 2009, it was restored and now operates as a restaurant and arts and exhibition space.
