The “new” Mazu temple in Lukang, built in 1788 by the order of the Qianlong Emperor. It was a gift to the people of Lukang in the aftermath of the Lin Shuangwen rebellion (林爽文事件). It is the only temple in Taiwan built by imperial decree, which is the meaning of the first two characters of its official name, Chijian Mazu Temple (敕建天后宮).
