A roughly 500 meter-long stretch of Yaolin Street (瑤林街) and Putou Street (埔頭街) in Lukang lined with Minnan-style shophouses traditionally divided into a front trading hall, central residence, and rear courtyard. It survived Japanese colonial era urban planning reforms and in 1986 it became Taiwan’s first officially recognized old street preservation area, anchoring a heritage district whose density of historic buildings is reportedly second only to that of Tainan. Nowadays it is fully developed for tourism and draws massive weekend crowds to its many boutique shops and snack stands.
