Taoziyuan Shinyo Base

Two tunnels for the storage of shinyo (suicide boats) were driven into the coral limestone shore at Taoziyuan, on the northern flank of Shoushan (壽山), by the 29th Shinyo Squadron (第29震洋隊), also known as the Nagai unit (永井部隊). The crews themselves were stationed inland at Pizitou (埤子頭), where urban development has left nothing behind. Recorded in 2012 as standing 80 metres apart, the larger tunnel ran 108 metres deep and the smaller 33, their mouths only meters from the water and rails still rusting inside. One has since been buried by a hillside collapse during a typhoon, and rails recovered from the other are now held at the Zuoying Military Zone Museum (左營軍區故事館). This stretch of coast falls within the Shoushan military controlled area (壽山軍事管制區), and special permission is required to visit.
