A grand Zhao’an Hakka style courtyard residence on the Yuemei Plain north of urban Daxi, built between 1860 and 1864 for Li Teng-fang (李騰芳, 1814–1881), a scholar from a wealthy family that had built up its fortune through rice milling and shipping along the Dahan River. Li passed the imperial xiucai examination in 1856 and the juren examination in 1865. The compound is laid out as a two-hall, four-wing complex around a four-sided central courtyard. It was designated a national monument in 1985 and underwent a full architectural restoration between 1997 and 2004.
