Originally established in 1934 as Taihei-kan (太平館). It was renamed Xinmin Theater (新民戲院) and then Wenhua Theater (文化戲院) after the war. In 1954 the name was changed one last time, to Cathay Theater (國泰戲院). This popular theater in Dadaocheng continued operating into the 1990s but eventually became a second-run cinema, likely managed by theater tycoon Huang Bingxi (黃炳熙). It was finally demolished in 2000.
