Built by the colonial government in Beitou in 1913 and modelled on the baths at Izusan Onsen (伊豆山温泉) in Shizuoka Prefecture, this was billed at the time as the largest hot spring bathhouse in East Asia. Imperial resting quarters (御休所) were added on the second floor for Crown Prince Hirohito’s visit to Beitou on his 1923 tour. Derelict by the late 1980s after post-war service as a Kuomintang party office, a council guesthouse, and a police substation, the building was rescued by a local campaign led by schoolteachers, designated a monument in 1997, and reopened the following year as Beitou Hot Spring Museum (北投溫泉博物館).
