Established in 1919 as Alishan Temple (阿里山寺) by the Caodong (曹洞宗) sect of Zen Buddhism, known in Japanese as Sōtō-shū. The temple was founded by Hioki Mokusen (日置默仙) and its main image is a Shakyamuni Buddha statue gifted by the King of Thailand to Emperor Taisho. A bronze bell and bell pavilion were added in 1921. After the war it was renamed Ciyun Temple (慈雲寺). Also romanized as Cihyun Temple.
