Established in an alleyway next to Beiji Temple (北極殿) the 1930s as Tamai-za (玉井座), a venue for traditional opera and performance. During the war it was appropriated for use as a warehouse, but operations resumed for a time in the late 1940s. It grew so popular that an overflow theater built with bamboo was constructed nearby (竹仔戲院). Later converted into residential buildings.
