Founded around 1864 by Yau Ma Tei boat people and villagers who relocated an earlier shrine from the Kwun Chung area, Tin Hau Temple anchors a row of five buildings including Shing Wong (1878), Kwun Yum (1894), Kwun Yam Lau She Tan (1894), and Hsu Yuen study hall (1897). Originally on the harbour, the complex now stands nearly three kilometers inland after more than a century of land reclamation, and lends its name to the adjacent Temple Street night market. Managed by the Tung Wah Group of Hospitals since 1914, the Tin Hau Temple was upgraded to a Grade I historic building in 2000.
