This Hakka old street in coastal Xinwu developed along what is now Zhongshan West Road and later spilled onto Bao’an Road, supporting a typical small town mix of businesses including the now-vanished Xiazhuangzi Theater. The street fell into terminal decline in the late 20th century with rural depopulation and a road widening project that demolished many of the more historic buildings along the stretch. Only a handful of shophouses survive today, scattered along the back lanes.
