Designed by Japanese architect Kondo Juro and completed in 1908, the Red House was the first government-run public market in Taiwan. After the war part of it was repurposed as a performance venue for traditional opera (紅樓劇場). This space, in turn, was eventually converted into a cinema (紅樓戲院), for which there is a separate listing. More recently the entire building was restored and revitalized, and it is now filled with boutique stores and surrounded by some of the better open-air dining and pubs in the city.
