Established in 1920 as Shinsekai-kan (新世界館), arguably the most prestigious motion picture theater in Taiwan at the time. The original three-storey Art Nouveau building faced Ximen Red House across what is now Chengdu Road. It had a capacity of approximately 1,700. In the post-war era it was renamed Xinshijie Theater (新世界戲院). The historic structure was demolished in 1965 and replaced with the commercial tower now at this location.
