On February 15th, 1995, a gas leak at the bar of this popular restaurant ignited a cataclysmic fire. Sealed emergency exits trapped diners, killing 64. The disaster spawned the “ghost ship” (幽靈船) urban legend, said to drift over Taichung collecting 100 souls, which popular lore blames for the subsequent decline of the nearby First Square (第一廣場). The building was later demolished and the space is now mostly used as a parking lot.
