One of two former railway tunnels on the Zhongliao Line (中寮線), built in 1938 to transport sugarcane and passengers from the hilly interior of Zhongliao to a sugar refinery in Nantou City. The line was abolished in the 1960s but both tunnel entrances still exist. The east entrance is inaccessible as it has been partly buried but it’s somewhat easier to locate just off the road.
