七美

Qimei

Qīměi (七美) is the southernmost and smallest township in Penghu, consisting of a single island of about seven square kilometres. Long known as Dayu (大嶼) and part of neighbouring Wangan until 1944, it was renamed in 1949 for the seven women commemorated at the Seven Beauties Tomb, who by legend drowned themselves in a well to escape pirates. The Twin-Heart Stone Weir below the island’s northeastern cliffs, built in 1937, is a tidal fish trap whose two enclosures form a pair of hearts when seen from above.
