Hualien’s first movie theater, originally built in the 1910s. Along with Inazumi-kan (稻住館) and Taihei-kan (太平館) it was one of the city’s three entertainment venues during the Japanese colonial era. Tsukushi-za, also known as Tsukushi-kan (筑紫館), was destroyed by fire in 1934, but the site on present-day Zhongzheng Road remained a well-known landmark for decades. Additionally, the name is sometimes written as Tek-tsú-kuán (竹子館), a Taiwanese Minnan approximation of the Japanese name!
